Trip description
From the sawmill in Ums to the Schnaggenkreuz
We first follow the road over which we have reached the parking lot. This leads at a leisurely pace from about 930 m to 860 m with 12% downhill, before it then rises again to 890 m to reach the hill with the Schneiderlein house. The approx. 20% gradient are to be mastered however due to the asphlatierten road well. You only have to be careful of cars here and there.
Behind the Schneiderlein house we turn left onto hiking trail no. 6, which climbs slowly with a maximum gradient of 15% towards the Schnaggenkreuz.
From the Schnaggenkreuz to the Schönblick mountain inn
At the Schnaggenkreuz itself, care is required. A total of about 7 hiking trails leave here and the signposting is correspondingly difficult to follow. We take hiking trail no. 5, which starts to the right of the cross. After a short time we come to a fork and decide to take the left path, for which we first have to open a gate. The path, which was designed by children, now leads slowly with a leisurely gradient of up to 10% in the direction of the fairground of Völser Aicha. If you like, you can turn left shortly before the fairground in the direction of the Grossmoos pond. The idyllically situated pond offers fishing grounds for fishermen and a place for a picnic by the water. We continue past the fairground along hiking trail no. 5, which now turns into an asphalt road. After a few meters we turn left in the direction of Mountain inn Schönblick. Here the road becomes much steeper again with up to 15%, but the view of the Schlern and the Rosengarten distracts very well from the effort. After about 1.6 km we reach the turnoff in the direction of Ums. If you like, you can continue to follow the road to the right and Mountain inn Schönblick take a break.
From the Schnaggenkreuz turnoff back to Ums
However, we go straight ahead and follow hiking trail 7 in the direction of Schnaggenkreuz/Ums. Here there are two gates to open in quick succession, which would be very difficult to open without an escort. Shortly after, we walk through a rather dense piece of forest and follow the unpaved forest path with a gradient of approx. 15%. A short time later we reach a crossroads where we can turn left back towards the Schnaggenkreuz or turn right towards Ums. We follow path no. 10 to the right in the direction of Ums. Here the path changes shortly afterwards to a meadow path, which can be quite muddy - depending on the weather conditions. The path now wanders along comfortably, in between there are short but stronger ascents to overcome, which may have to be reversed. Depending on the power of the traction engine. However, these remain the exception. The path remains after the trail junction direction Gasthaus Schönblick exclusively in the forest and meanders in serpentines with up to 25% slowly in the direction of Umser sawmill.
Trail conditions
From Ums to Schnaggenkreuz asphalted road, then unpaved forest road with fine gravel to the forest path to the Völser Aicha fairground. Then asphalted road again to Schönblick. From Schönblick to Ums continuously unpaved forest road, partly meadow path. (see pictures)
Directions
From Blumau in the direction of Völs am Schlern/Seiser Alm. Behind the Faust Inn, turn right in the direction of Prösels/Ums. Go through Prösels until you reach the Ums sawmill. Directly in front of the sawmill turn right over the bridge for approx. 250 m. There is no official car park here, but there is plenty of room to park.
Time requirement
There and back in total about 3 1/2 hours.
Difference in altitude
There are about 350 meters of altitude to overcome on this tour. However, as the trail goes up and down several times, the effective altitude gain is approx. 450 metres.
Suitable wheelchair
- Wheelchair with traction device
- off-road power wheelchairs
Accompanying person
A companion should be present on this tour. Not necessarily because of the path, but rather because of the fences and animal gates that must be opened. The path is - if you are not afraid of reversing - also good to drive independently.

Level of difficulty
Medium
Explanation
We have classified this tour as medium, since the path is passable with a good traction motor without outside help. A possible backward driving and muddy places depending on the weather should, however, be planned for. We would also like to point out that an escort is not absolutely necessary, but can be a great advantage when opening the countless gates.
Resting facilities
Berggasthaus Schönblick, Restaurant Umser Mühlele, Prösels Castle
Tested:
- Schönblick mountain inn ( 1,260 m): Both the sun terrace and the interior rooms (best accessed via the entrance on the terrace) are accessible by wheelchair.
- Umser Mühlele ( 800 m): The Umser Mühlele can be reached via a detour from Ums. Turn right here at the bus stop "Hofmüller" and after about 500 m you will reach the restaurant via a steeply sloping road. The terrace and the interior are easily accessible by wheelchair.
- Prösels Castle ( 880 m): You can also reach Prösels Castle via a detour by not turning off at the "Schneiderlein" bus stop in the direction of Schnaggenkreuz, but continuing to follow the road in the direction of Prösels/Castle Prösels. At the castle there is a small café where you can get cold drinks & snacks. However, it is located on a small hill and cannot be reached without assistance.
Accessible toilet
Barrier-free toilets are available at Prösels Castle.
