Trip description

Mountain station Alpe di Siusi to the Puflatsch Hut

After a leisurely ride on the barrier-free gondola lift, we reach the top station, which is located directly at the starting point of Compatsch. Directly at the exit of the mountain station, we go down to the left to the road (no. 14) and follow it, where we can admire the Hotel Alpina Dolomites on the left and the Appartments Alpe di Siusi on the right. Up to this point the asphalted road is still pleasant to ride on with a gradient of approx. 10%, the next section up to the Eurotel lift is already steeper with up to 15%. At the top station of the Eurotel lift we take a short break and enjoy the view of the Alpe di Siusi.

Now we tackle the road, which serves in winter as a toboggan run and have with this section of the steepest slope with up to 35% then behind us. Since it is an asphalt road throughout, the slope is not a problem (please note here, if 35% are too steep). In the meantime we have made 1.4 km and can enjoy the view at an altitude of 2,000 m. Past meadows and small hay huts (sometimes there are Haflinger on the meadows), the path now meanders further to the Puflatsch hut, whereby here again a gradient of approx. 20% awaits us on the last few metres. Those who want to visit the Puflatsch hut can now turn right and conquer it from the back. Around the building, between the mountain station of the Puflatschbahn and the hut, you reach the beautiful sun terrace with a view over the alpine pasture.

From the Puflatsch hut to the Arnika hut

After a short rest at the Puflatsch hut, we return to our starting point and continue along this path for a short distance. Here the surface changes from an asphalt road to a wide footpath with a gravel surface, which leads up to the extensive plateau with a slight climb from 10%. At a crossroads keep to the left in the direction of Arnica hut  (path no. 14), but not without first enjoying the panoramic view in the direction of Plattkofel and Langkofel. After a comfortable stretch of trail, which was almost flat, there is now a sloping section down to the Arnikahütte (2,062 m), which should not be a problem.

Those who still want a bit of adventure can continue along a small, steep hiking trail over a bumpy ascent (wooden lattice) to the wooden cross. On the hill thus reached, benches and tables are available. You can also enjoy a breathtaking view of Castelrotto as well as Lajen and the surrounding area.

The way back is the same as the way there.

Tip: Shortcut with the cable car

If the section to the Puflatsch hut is too steep for you, you can instead follow a gravel path (no. 14B) from the Seiser Alm cable car mountain station to the valley station of the Puflatsch cable car and shorten the section to the Puflatsch hut with the cable car.

Explanation

The gradients from the starting point to the Puflatsch Hut are relatively steep at up to 35% and are therefore actually classified as difficult. However, because it is an asphalted road, this section is easily manageable. Those who do not dare to do this can use the cable car instead. From the Puflatsch hut onwards there are only moderate gradients. Therefore we have classified this tour under medium. Backing up should not be necessary, likewise an escort should not be mandatory.
